Permission to Be
Recently, I’ve come to understand more deeply that I am neurodivergent (AuDHD).
Looking back, it begins to make sense of a quiet, lifelong tension I didn’t always have words for—trying to fit into systems, structures, and expectations whose underlying rationale I did not always feel aligned with.
Growing up in a shame-based, collectivist culture, there was little room to explore one’s own voice, thoughts, or desires.
Very early on, I learned to prioritise maintaining emotional stability in my environment—often at the expense of my own sense of self.
What I did not have, for a long time, was permission:to think differently, to feel differently, to be.
This is something I now hold very intentionally in my work with clients—especially those navigating trauma, cultural identity, and neurodivergence.
Creating a space where someone can safely begin to be themselves may seem simple. But for many, it is profoundly unfamiliar—and deeply needed.
